How to Easily Include Your Guest Episodes on OTHER Podcasts in YOUR FeedI was recently contacted by Shelby Forsythia, who was a guest on episode 214, about getting a special link so she could include her episode on MY show in HER podcast feed.

Let me say that again: she wanted to include HER episode on MY podcast in HER podcast feed. I had no idea you could do this! I’m including an adaptation of Shelby’s instructions below. Please note, these instructions are only valid if you host with Libsyn.

Thanks to Shelby, I’ll be doing two things:

  1. I’ll contact all the podcasts I’ve been a guest on and asking them for the embed code for my episode on their show
  2. I’ll contact all the people who have been guests on my show who also have podcasts and I’ll give them the embed code and instructions on how to include the episode on their show, should they choose to do so

A quick note of caution regarding this method: it’s a hack, not an official Libsyn feature. And as such…there are risks involved. You’re essentially adding code to your RSS feed. However, I’ve decided it’s such a great hack that it’s worth sharing.

Here’s how to get the embed code:

This is what you need to do when you’re giving the embed code to someone who was a guest on your show.

  1. Go to Content > Previously Published. Search for the episode you want.
  2. Click the Link/Embed button.
  3. Find the Enclosure Tag. Copy it and paste it into an email for your guest.

Here's how to get the embed code on Libsyn

Note that the enclosure tag will look something like this:

<enclosure url=”http://traffic.libsyn.com/sociallyholistic/238_Jo_Casey__Holly__How_to_Find_a_Business_Model_That_Works_for_You.mp3″ length=”58379264″ type=”audio/mpeg” ></enclosure>

Here’s how to use the embed code:

This is what you need to do when you’re using the embed code someone gave you after you were a guest on their show.

  1. Log in to Libsyn and select Content > Add New Text Post.
  2. Add in the Title/Subtitle/Description. For the title, I used this format: “BONUS! [Name of podcast] with [Host of podcast]: [Title of episode]”. Then I copied and pasted the description that was used on the original podcast episode (written by the other podcast host).
  3. Go to Scheduling > Advanced. Uncheck all destinations except for “Libsyn Classic Feed” (you may see this listed as “RSS Feed” or “Podcast Feed”).
  4. Set the date. You have two options: you can either backdate the episode to the date that it was originally released on the other person’s podcast, or you can release it now as a “new” episode. If you want to backdate, select “Set new release date” and pick the relevant date/time. If you want to release now, select “Release immediately on publish.”
  5. Go to Advanced > Extra Tags. Add in the enclosure tag provided by the other podcast host. It must be the full enclosure tag, and not just the URL for the media file. It must include < and > at each end. See above for an example of what a full enclosure tag looks like.
  6. Click Publish.

It just takes a few minutes. This interview is now live in YOUR podcast’s feed, and your listeners are able to more easily access the episodes where you’ve been a guest on another person’s show. It’s also another way of saying thanks to the show’s host, because THEY get all the downloads and stats on the episode. Remember, you’re essentially linking to their episode, rather than uploading the audio as a separate episode on your show.

Please note that this is just for Libsyn. There may be ways to do this with other podcast hosts, but I have no idea what they are. If you find out, let me know and I’ll include the links here.
